In 1992 I was just about done collecting comics because the guitar was my new love and would end up taking most of my teenage income. But then came the Death of Superman storyline. I coiuld’t believe they were actually going to kill him, but I had to find out. I remember buying the lead up issues from the spinner rack at a Food Lion grocery store in Dickson, Tennessee. The story was really the first time I had encountered the death of a beloved, foundational character like Superman. It was shocking and truly felt like the end of something, and for me, it was. This event officially ended my comic book collecting for roughly 15 years. I didn’t stop because it was so bad, but because it felt like the end of an era in my own life as well. It’s still one of my favorite storylines and I reread it about once a year.
